Summary

Losartan is partly converted to its active metabolite E-3174 via CYP2C9 and CYP3A4. Metronidazole could theoretically alter this conversion, but there is no convincing evidence of a clinically important change in blood pressure control.

What this interaction means in plain words

Losartan and Metronidazole have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Metronidazole belongs to Anti Parasitic.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Theoretical weak inhibition of CYP2C9 by metronidazole may alter formation of the active metabolite of losartan.

What to do

No empirical dose change is needed; check blood pressure if the patient receives a prolonged course of metronidazole.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
  • Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
