Summary
Aminoglycosides can cause renal magnesium wasting, which may lower serum magnesium during prolonged therapy. Separately, magnesium can add to the neuromuscular blocking effect of aminoglycosides, which matters most with parenteral magnesium sulfate.
What this interaction means in plain words
Magnesium and Streptomycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Magnesium belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Streptomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Aminoglycoside-induced tubular injury increases urinary magnesium loss, and both agents impair neuromuscular transmission at the junction.
What to do
Monitor serum magnesium during aminoglycoside therapy and replace as needed. Watch for respiratory depression and muscle weakness when parenteral magnesium is given at the same time.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
