Summary

Oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy causes myelosuppression and immune suppression, so the response to the live vaccine may be reduced. Replication of the vaccine viruses may be uncontrolled, which can cause serious vaccine-strain disease.

What this interaction means in plain words

Measles mumps and rubella vaccine and Oxaliplatin are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Measles mumps and rubella vaccine belongs to Miscellaneous; Oxaliplatin belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Cytotoxic chemotherapy suppresses immune function, which blunts vaccine response and permits replication of live attenuated virus.

What to do

Do not give MMR during chemotherapy; give it at least 2 to 4 weeks before starting if feasible. After completion, delay vaccination for about 3 months and until immune recovery.
