Summary
MMRV contains live attenuated viruses, including varicella, which can disseminate in patients receiving immunosuppressive methylprednisolone. The immune response may also be diminished.
What this interaction means in plain words
Measles mumps rubella and varicella vaccine live and Methylprednisolone are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Corticosteroid-induced suppression of cell-mediated immunity permits uncontrolled replication of live vaccine viruses.
What to do
Do not administer during immunosuppressive steroid doses; postpone until steroids have been stopped for the recommended interval. Separate MMR and varicella vaccines are not safer, so use the same deferral.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
