Summary
Tipranavir oral solution and capsules contain alcohol (capsules contain dehydrated alcohol), and metronidazole may cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol. This could cause flushing, nausea, vomiting and palpitations. The CYP3A4 effect of metronidazole on tipranavir is not clinically meaningful.
What this interaction means in plain words
Metronidazole and Tipranavir can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Metronidazole belongs to Anti Parasitic; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Ethanol in the tipranavir formulation combined with metronidazole's proposed impairment of acetaldehyde metabolism.
