Summary
Fluoroquinolones and corticosteroids each raise the risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture, and the risk is higher when they are given together. The Achilles tendon is most often affected, and the risk rises further in older patients and transplant recipients. A single local injection carries less systemic exposure than oral or intravenous steroid, but the risk is not zero.
What this interaction means in plain words
Moxifloxacin and Triamcinolone acetonide injectable can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive tendon toxicity, with fluoroquinolones impairing tenocyte function and collagen matrix and corticosteroids reducing collagen synthesis.
What to do
Avoid the combination in patients over 60 or with prior tendon disorders, and choose a non-quinolone antibiotic if possible. Tell patients to stop moxifloxacin and rest at the first sign of tendon pain or swelling.
