Summary
Ondansetron prolongs the QT interval, and albuterol can cause hypokalemia, tachycardia and a small QT effect, especially at high or nebulized doses. Together they may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmia in susceptible patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Albuterol and Ondansetron have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Additive QT effect, with albuterol-induced hypokalemia and beta-adrenergic stimulation adding to the risk.
What to do
No routine action is needed at usual doses. Check potassium and consider an ECG in patients receiving high-dose beta-agonists or with underlying cardiac disease.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
