Summary
Oxaliplatin causes myelosuppression and immunosuppression, so a live-attenuated vaccine may replicate unchecked and cause vaccine-strain disease. The vaccine response may also be blunted. In practice, rotavirus vaccine is given to infants, so this pairing is rarely relevant.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxaliplatin and Rotavirus oral vaccine live are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression impairs control of live vaccine organisms and reduces the immune response to the vaccine.
What to do
Do not give live vaccines during oxaliplatin therapy. Delay live vaccination until immune recovery, generally at least 3 months after chemotherapy ends, and follow local immunization guidance.
