Summary
Rubella vaccine contains live attenuated virus. In patients immunosuppressed by oxaliplatin, the vaccine virus may cause disseminated infection and the antibody response may be poor.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxaliplatin and Rubella vaccine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression impairs control of live vaccine organisms and reduces the immune response to the vaccine.
What to do
Avoid rubella vaccine during oxaliplatin treatment. Vaccinate at least 3 months after chemotherapy ends once immune recovery is confirmed, or earlier only if specialist guidance supports it.
