Summary
NSAIDs may reduce renal clearance of tobramycin, increasing exposure and the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. The effect was described mainly in preterm infants, but NSAID renal effects also matter in at-risk adults.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxaprozin and Tobramycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal; Tobramycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis decreases glomerular filtration and aminoglycoside clearance.
What to do
Monitor tobramycin serum concentrations and creatinine when an NSAID is co-administered. Avoid the NSAID in neonates, older adults or renal impairment where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
