Summary

Procarbazine is a weak MAO inhibitor, so adding it to phenelzine increases the risk of hypertensive crisis and serotonin syndrome and potentiates other interactions. Use of both is contraindicated.

What this interaction means in plain words

Phenelzine and Procarbazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Phenelzine belongs to Central Nervous System; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive MAO inhibition leading to excess monoamine accumulation.

What to do

Avoid the combination and keep a 2-week gap between the drugs. Select an antidepressant without MAO inhibition for patients receiving procarbazine.
