Summary
Tetrabenazine is contraindicated with MAO inhibitors because of the risk of hypertensive reactions. A 14-day gap is recommended after stopping an MAO inhibitor.
What this interaction means in plain words
Rasagiline and Tetrabenazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Rasagiline belongs to Central Nervous System; Tetrabenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Tetrabenazine depletes vesicular monoamines, and MAO inhibition prevents degradation of released catecholamines, causing hypertension.
What to do
Do not co-administer; allow at least 14 days between stopping an MAO inhibitor and starting tetrabenazine. Review the choice of Parkinson disease or chorea therapy.
