Summary

Tetrabenazine releases/depletes monoamine stores and MAO inhibitors are contraindicated with it because of the risk of hypertensive reactions. Linezolid, with MAO-inhibiting activity, may therefore provoke acute hypertension.

What this interaction means in plain words

Linezolid and Tetrabenazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Linezolid belongs to Anti Bacterial; Tetrabenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition by linezolid allows norepinephrine accumulation in neurons, and tetrabenazine-induced release produces an exaggerated pressor response.

What to do

Avoid the combination and separate an MAOI from tetrabenazine by about 14 days where feasible. Use a non-MAOI antibiotic instead.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
