For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Tetrabenazine releases and depletes monoamines, and with an MAO inhibitor such as procarbazine this can cause a hypertensive episode. Tetrabenazine labeling contraindicates use with MAOIs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Procarbazine and Tetrabenazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Procarbazine belongs to Oncology; Tetrabenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition lets norepinephrine accumulate in neurons while tetrabenazine alters its release, causing pressor excess.

What to do

Do not combine; allow at least 14 days between stopping an MAOI and starting tetrabenazine. Select a different therapy for chorea if procarbazine is needed.

What to ask your pharmacist
