Summary
Albuterol, especially at high or nebulized doses, can cause tachycardia, hypokalemia and QT prolongation. Risperidone has modest QT-prolonging potential, so the combination could add to arrhythmia risk in predisposed patients. At usual inhaled doses the risk is low.
What this interaction means in plain words
Albuterol and Risperidone have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Additive QT effects, with beta-2 agonist-induced hypokalemia increasing susceptibility.
What to do
No routine change is needed at usual doses. Monitor ECG and potassium if high-dose or frequent albuterol is needed or other QT risk factors exist.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
