Summary
Sulfonamide antibacterials can occasionally lower blood glucose, and this may add to the effect of rosiglitazone. Hypoglycemia is uncommon with rosiglitazone alone but may be more likely when combined with other glucose-lowering agents.
What this interaction means in plain words
Rosiglitazone and Sulfamethoxypyridazine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Possible additive hypoglycemic effect; sulfonamides may also inhibit CYP2C8, which metabolizes rosiglitazone, though this is not well established for this agent.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose when starting or stopping the sulfonamide, especially if the patient also takes insulin or a sulfonylurea.
