Résumé
Brimonidine labelling forbids use with MAO inhibitors, and linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic with weak, reversible MAO-inhibiting activity. Systemic absorption of the alpha-2 agonist could lead to unpredictable blood-pressure changes, and the effect on catecholamine handling is poorly characterised.
Ce que signifie cette interaction, en termes simples
Brimonidine and Linezolid are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Brimonidine belongs to Miscellaneous; Linezolid belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Pourquoi elle survient
Uncertain: MAO inhibition may alter handling of circulating amines and potentiate systemic alpha-2 agonist cardiovascular effects
Conduite à tenir
Avoid brimonidine in patients taking linezolid; use a different intraocular-pressure-lowering agent such as a prostaglandin analogue or beta-blocker where appropriate.
