Sintesi
Combining an MAOI with amoxapine can produce serotonin syndrome and hypertensive reactions. Labeling prohibits concurrent use of MAOIs and tricyclic-type antidepressants.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Amoxapine and Isocarboxazid are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Perché avviene
MAO inhibition combined with amoxapine's reuptake inhibition of norepinephrine and serotonin leads to excess monoamine activity.
Cosa fare
Do not coadminister. Allow a washout of at least 14 days after stopping isocarboxazid before starting amoxapine, and an adequate washout in the other direction.
Cosa chiedere al farmacista
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
