Sintesi
Bismuth subsalicylate releases salicylate, which can increase bleeding risk through antiplatelet effects and possible displacement of warfarin from protein binding. High or prolonged doses carry the greatest risk, and gastric irritation may add to bleeding.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Bismuth subsalicylate and Warfarin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Bismuth subsalicylate belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Warfarin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Perché avviene
Salicylate impairs platelet function, may cause GI mucosal injury and can potentiate warfarin's anticoagulant effect.
Cosa fare
Avoid regular or high-dose use; if short-term use is necessary, monitor INR and watch for bleeding. Consider an alternative antidiarrheal or antacid.
