Sintesi
Combining bupropion with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor can cause hypertensive reactions due to increased catecholamine levels. The label contraindicates this combination.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Bupropion and Selegiline transdermal are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Perché avviene
Bupropion inhibits dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake while MAO inhibition reduces their breakdown, producing additive catecholaminergic effects.
Cosa fare
Do not coadminister. Allow at least 14 days between stopping the MAOI and starting bupropion, and likewise when switching in the other direction.
