Sintesi
Both drugs can cause agranulocytosis, so combined use may heighten the risk of severe neutropenia and infection.
Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici
Carbamazepine and Propylthiouracil can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Carbamazepine belongs to Central Nervous System; Propylthiouracil belongs to Endocrine.
Perché avviene
Additive pharmacodynamic myelotoxicity, as each drug independently can cause idiosyncratic agranulocytosis.
Cosa fare
Check a baseline and periodic white cell count with differential, and counsel the patient to report fever or sore throat at once. Stop the offending drug if neutropenia develops, and consider an alternative anticonvulsant.
