Sintesi

Griseofulvin has been associated with breakthrough bleeding, menstrual irregularities and reduced reliability of combined oral contraceptives. Contraceptive failure and unintended pregnancy are possible, which is especially important because griseofulvin is potentially teratogenic.

Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici

Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone and Griseofulvin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Ethinyl estradiol-drospirenone belongs to Endocrine; Griseofulvin belongs to Anti Fungals.

Livello di evidenza: Moderate

Perché avviene

Griseofulvin is thought to induce hepatic enzymes (CYP3A4) and increase metabolism of ethinyl estradiol and the progestin, lowering their exposure.

Cosa fare

Add a reliable non-hormonal barrier method throughout griseofulvin therapy and for at least one month after stopping. Consider an alternative antifungal where possible.
