Sintesi

Venlafaxine and NSAIDs including selective COX-2 inhibitors such as etoricoxib each increase the risk of bleeding, and together the risk of gastrointestinal and other haemorrhage is higher. The absolute risk is modest in healthy patients but meaningful in older adults and those with prior ulcers. Etoricoxib may carry less gastric toxicity than non-selective NSAIDs but does not remove this risk.

Cosa significa questa interazione in parole semplici

Etoricoxib and Venlafaxine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Etoricoxib belongs to Musculoskeletal; Venlafaxine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Livello di evidenza: Moderate

Perché avviene

Venlafaxine inhibits serotonin reuptake into platelets, depleting platelet serotonin and impairing aggregation, while NSAIDs add mucosal injury and effects on haemostasis. Etoricoxib may also raise blood pressure, which venlafaxine can also do.

Cosa fare

Use the lowest effective etoricoxib dose for the shortest duration, and consider a PPI in patients with risk factors for GI bleeding. Monitor for bruising, melaena, haematemesis and check blood count if use is prolonged.

Cosa chiedere al farmacista

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
