Acts primarily in intestinal lumen; mechanism unknown

Intestinal Amebiasis: 650 mg PO PC q8hr for 20 days; not to exceed 2 g/day

- Unknown Oral amoebicide; little is absorbed, but it is about 64% iodine, and iodine excess can affect the fetal thyroid. Limited case reports show no fetal harm. Use only if clearly needed; for intestinal amoebiasis in pregnancy, paromomycin is often preferred.

- Unknown Not known if it passes into milk; no LactMed record and no label milk data. Little is absorbed, but it is about 64% iodine, and iodine concentrates in milk and could affect the infant's thyroid. Avoid if possible; if used, keep the course short and watch the infant for thyroid signs.
