Как действует
Mechanism not fully understood. Nifurtimox is activated by type I and type II nitroreductases, producing toxic intermediate metabolites and/or reactive oxygen species that induce DNA damage and cell death of intracellular and extracellular T. cruzi.

- Unknown Nifurtimox is present in breast milk (estimated infant dose less than 15% of the pediatric daily dose); monitor infants for vomiting, rash, decreased appetite, pyrexia and irritability; weigh benefits of breastfeeding against maternal need.

- Alcohol consumption during treatment

- Genotoxicity demonstrated in humans, in vitro and in rodents; carcinogenicity in humans unknown.
- Embryo-fetal toxicity: can cause fetal harm; pregnancy test before treatment; effective contraception during treatment and for 6 months after; males use condoms during and for 3 months after.
- May worsen neurological and psychiatric conditions (brain injury, seizures, psychiatric disease); use under close medical supervision.
