What this interaction means in plain words

Amikacin and Oxaliplatin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amikacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Oxaliplatin belongs to Oncology.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity through separate toxic effects on renal tubular and cochlear cells.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and electrolytes during combined therapy and ask patients about hearing loss, tinnitus or vertigo. Use aminoglycoside dosing guided by levels and renal function, and choose a non-nephrotoxic antibiotic if possible.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
