Summary
Heparins, including low molecular weight heparins, can suppress aldosterone production. Combined with an ACE inhibitor such as benazepril, this can raise serum potassium, especially in patients with renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Amlodipine-benazepril and Dalteparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Amlodipine-benazepril belongs to Cardiovascular; Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced suppression of adrenal aldosterone synthesis adds to the potassium-retaining effect of ACE inhibition.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function when anticoagulation is prolonged, particularly in patients with kidney disease or diabetes. Review other potassium-raising agents.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
