Summary

Both gentamicin and angiotensin receptor blockers can impair kidney function, and volume depletion increases that risk. Gentamicin can also cause renal potassium and magnesium wasting while valsartan retains potassium, making electrolyte shifts unpredictable.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amlodipine-valsartan and Gentamicin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Amlodipine-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Gentamicin belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxic risk, as aminoglycoside tubular toxicity combines with ARB-reduced glomerular perfusion pressure.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine, potassium and magnesium, and gentamicin levels, and consider temporarily holding valsartan if acute kidney injury or volume depletion develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
