Summary

Amobarbital is an inducer of hepatic enzymes including CYP3A4 and may lower tolterodine concentrations. The effect is generally modest because the active 5-hydroxymethyl metabolite is formed via CYP2D6 and exposure to the active moiety is partly preserved. Reduced bladder symptom control is possible.

What this interaction means in plain words

Amobarbital and Tolterodine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Amobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System; Tolterodine belongs to Genitourinary.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Barbiturate induction of CYP3A4 increases tolterodine clearance.

What to do

Monitor for reduced response to tolterodine and increase the dose if needed within labeled limits.
