Summary

Fluconazole can prolong the QT interval and long-acting beta-agonists such as arformoterol may also affect QTc and cause hypokalemia. Used together, they may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmia, especially in patients with cardiac disease or electrolyte abnormalities.

What this interaction means in plain words

Arformoterol and Fluconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Arformoterol belongs to Respiratory; Fluconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation, with beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia potentially increasing arrhythmic susceptibility.

What to do

Check potassium and magnesium and correct deficits. Monitor ECG and for palpitations in patients with cardiac risk factors or other QT-prolonging drugs.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
