Summary
Hydrochlorothiazide and arformoterol both can lower serum potassium, and combined use may produce clinically important hypokalemia. This may increase the risk of ECG changes and arrhythmias, especially at higher beta agonist doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Arformoterol and Hydrochlorothiazide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Arformoterol belongs to Respiratory; Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from renal potassium wasting and beta2-mediated cellular potassium uptake.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium periodically and correct deficits. Use caution in patients with cardiac disease or hypoxia.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
