Summary

Thyroid hormone can increase catabolism of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors, and this enhances the effect of oral anticoagulants. For argatroban, a direct thrombin inhibitor, any such effect is not well established, so the interaction is largely theoretical.

What this interaction means in plain words

Argatroban and Levothyroxine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Argatroban belongs to Cardiovascular; Levothyroxine belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Possible additive effect on coagulation; thyroid hormone increases clotting factor turnover, but a clear interaction with direct thrombin inhibitors is not established.

What to do

No routine change is needed; monitor aPTT per argatroban protocol when thyroid dose changes or in newly treated thyrotoxic patients.
