Summary

Oliceridine is an opioid that causes sedation and respiratory depression, and aripiprazole adds CNS depressant effects. Oliceridine is also partly metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2D6, which aripiprazole does not substantially affect, so the main concern is additive depression.

What this interaction means in plain words

Aripiprazole and Oliceridine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Aripiprazole belongs to Central Nervous System; Oliceridine belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive CNS and respiratory depression between an opioid and an antipsychotic.

What to do

Reserve combined use for patients without adequate alternatives, using the lowest oliceridine dose for the shortest duration. Monitor sedation and respiratory rate closely.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
