Summary
Cidofovir causes dose-related proximal tubular injury, and systemic bacitracin is also nephrotoxic. Together they can cause severe, potentially irreversible kidney damage.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bacitracin and Cidofovir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Bacitracin belongs to Miscellaneous; Cidofovir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Additive nephrotoxicity affecting the proximal renal tubule.
What to do
Avoid the combination, since cidofovir labeling prohibits other nephrotoxic agents. Choose an alternative to one drug, and if unavoidable, stop the nephrotoxin well before cidofovir and monitor creatinine.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
