Summary
Systemic bacitracin (parenteral) is markedly nephrotoxic, and cisplatin is nephrotoxic and ototoxic. Together they raise the risk of acute kidney injury and increased cisplatin exposure.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bacitracin and Cisplatin can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Bacitracin belongs to Miscellaneous; Cisplatin belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Additive nephrotoxicity from proximal tubular injury.
What to do
Avoid concurrent systemic bacitracin and choose a non-nephrotoxic antibiotic. If unavoidable, monitor serum creatinine and electrolytes closely.
What to ask your pharmacist

- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
