Summary
ACE inhibitors can enhance insulin sensitivity and occasionally cause hypoglycemia in patients on antidiabetic drugs. They may also reduce renal function in volume-depleted patients, and together with dapagliflozin's diuretic effect this can raise the risk of acute kidney injury and metformin accumulation with lactic acidosis.
What this interaction means in plain words
Benazepril and Dapagliflozin-metformin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Benazepril belongs to Cardiovascular; Dapagliflozin-metformin belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic effects on glucose lowering and on renal hemodynamics, with reduced renal function possibly decreasing metformin clearance.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose, renal function and volume status when starting or adjusting benazepril, and hold metformin if acute kidney injury or dehydration develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
