Both drugs depress the central nervous system and have anticholinergic activity, so taking them together can deepen drowsiness and impair psychomotor performance. Dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation and confusion may also be more pronounced, especially in older adults.
What this interaction means in plain words
Brompheniramine and Maprotiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Brompheniramine belongs to Respiratory; Maprotiline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive central sedation from histamine H1 blockade and additive antimuscarinic effects.
What to do
Warn the patient about drowsiness and avoid driving or operating machinery until the response is known. Prefer a non-sedating antihistamine if one is needed, and watch older patients for anticholinergic effects.
