Summary
Both drugs can lower serum potassium, through renal potassium loss with the loop diuretic and beta-2 mediated cellular uptake with norepinephrine. Together they may add to hypokalemia, which raises arrhythmia risk in critically ill patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bumetanide and Norepinephrine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive hypokalemia from renal potassium wasting (bumetanide) and beta-adrenergic intracellular potassium shift (norepinephrine).
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium regularly during combined use and replace electrolytes to keep levels in the normal range. Use ECG monitoring in patients with cardiac disease.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
