Summary
Non-acetylated salicylates can reduce the diuretic effect of loop diuretics and may affect renal function, especially at higher doses. Salicylate clearance may also be reduced, increasing salicylate toxicity risk in high-dose use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Bumetanide and Salicylates can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Prostaglandin synthesis inhibition causes sodium retention and reduced renal blood flow, and loop diuretics compete for renal tubular secretion with salicylates.
What to do
Monitor diuretic response, weight and renal function. Use the lowest effective salicylate dose and watch for signs of salicylate toxicity such as tinnitus at high doses.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
