Summary
Canakinumab blocks interleukin-1 beta and may modestly blunt immune responses, but studies of inactivated vaccines in treated patients showed adequate antibody responses. The conjugate pneumococcal vaccine is non-live, so the contraindication stated for live vaccines does not apply. Any reduction in protection is likely small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Canakinumab and Pneumococcal vaccine 13-valent have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Canakinumab belongs to Miscellaneous; Pneumococcal vaccine 13-valent belongs to Miscellaneous.
Why it happens
Immunomodulation through IL-1 beta blockade may theoretically reduce vaccine immunogenicity, though this is not well established.
