Summary
Heparins can suppress adrenal aldosterone production, which may cause hyperkalemia. Combined with an ARB, which also lowers aldosterone effect, the risk of elevated potassium increases, notably in diabetes, renal impairment or prolonged use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Candesartan and Dalteparin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Candesartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Dalteparin belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of aldosterone synthesis adds to ARB blockade of angiotensin II-driven aldosterone effects.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, especially if therapy continues beyond several days or renal function is reduced.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
