Summary

Angiotensin receptor blockers may slightly improve insulin sensitivity, which could add to the glucose-lowering effect of liraglutide. Liraglutide alone rarely causes hypoglycemia, so the clinical effect is expected to be small. Liraglutide-related vomiting or diarrhea may also cause volume depletion and renal impairment in patients on an ARB.

What this interaction means in plain words

Candesartan and Liraglutide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Candesartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Liraglutide belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Possible additive improvement in glycemic control through ARB-related insulin sensitization; GI fluid loss from liraglutide can add renal risk.

What to do

Monitor glucose when starting either drug, and advise temporary candesartan interruption if severe vomiting or dehydration develops.
