Summary
Some cephalosporins have been associated with additive kidney injury when given with potent loop diuretics, especially in volume-depleted or older patients. Cefadroxil is a first-generation oral cephalosporin with little nephrotoxicity of its own, so the risk is modest. Furosemide may also reduce renal clearance of cefadroxil if dehydration occurs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefadroxil and Furosemide have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefadroxil belongs to Anti Bacterial; Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Diuretic-induced volume depletion and reduced renal perfusion may add to cephalosporin renal effects and slow its elimination.
What to do
Maintain hydration and monitor serum creatinine in patients with renal impairment or volume depletion. Adjust cefadroxil dose to renal function.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
