Summary

Both drugs are acidic compounds eliminated partly by renal tubular secretion, so meclofenamate exposure may rise slightly. Cefotetan can also cause hypoprothrombinemia and bleeding, which may add to the platelet-inhibiting and mucosal effects of the NSAID.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefotetan and Meclofenamic acid have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Cefotetan belongs to Anti Bacterial; Meclofenamic acid belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Competition for renal tubular anion secretion, plus additive bleeding tendency.

What to do

Monitor for bleeding signs and consider checking INR in at-risk patients such as the elderly, malnourished or renally impaired. No dose change is usually required.
