Summary
Probenecid markedly decreases renal tubular secretion of cefoxitin, resulting in higher and longer-lasting concentrations. This is used intentionally in some regimens, such as for pelvic inflammatory disease.
What this interaction means in plain words
Cefoxitin and Probenecid have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Cefoxitin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Probenecid belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
Probenecid inhibits OAT-mediated renal tubular secretion of cefoxitin.
What to do
No action is needed when combined intentionally; reduce cefoxitin dose in renal impairment as usual.
