Summary

Both drugs can affect the kidney, and aminoglycosides also damage the inner ear. Oral cefpodoxime has little nephrotoxic potential of its own, so any added renal risk is small, but renal impairment can raise streptomycin levels and its toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Cefpodoxime and Streptomycin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.

Cefpodoxime belongs to Anti Bacterial; Streptomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Possible additive renal effects; aminoglycoside nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity are concentration-dependent and worsen if renal clearance falls.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and streptomycin levels during therapy and ask about hearing or balance symptoms. Adjust the streptomycin dose to renal function.
