Summary
NSAIDs may reduce renal clearance of vancomycin, and this has chiefly been described in neonates. Higher vancomycin concentrations together with additive nephrotoxic potential could increase the risk of kidney injury. In healthy adults the effect is small.
What this interaction means in plain words
Celecoxib and Vancomycin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Celecoxib belongs to Musculoskeletal; Vancomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
NSAID-induced reduction in renal perfusion and glomerular filtration decreases vancomycin elimination.
What to do
Monitor vancomycin trough or AUC-guided levels and serum creatinine, particularly in neonates and patients with renal impairment.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
