Summary
Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic stimulant that may partly offset chloral hydrate sedation, but the net effect is unpredictable. Chloral hydrate metabolites may also sensitize the myocardium to catecholamines, and ephedrine can add to the risk of tachyarrhythmias.
What this interaction means in plain words
Chloral hydrate and Ephedrine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Chloral hydrate belongs to Central Nervous System; Ephedrine belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Opposing pharmacodynamic CNS effects, with theoretical myocardial sensitization to sympathomimetics by chloral hydrate metabolites.
What to do
Monitor heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure when used together. Do not rely on ephedrine to reverse sedation.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
