Summary
Ephedrine releases noradrenaline indirectly, and procarbazine inhibits MAO, so the pressor response may be markedly exaggerated. This may cause a hypertensive crisis, severe headache, and arrhythmias.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ephedrine and Procarbazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Ephedrine belongs to Cardiovascular; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
MAO inhibition increases neuronal noradrenaline stores and prolongs the effect of indirect sympathomimetics.
What to do
Avoid ephedrine and other sympathomimetics during and for 14 days after procarbazine. Use non-pressor alternatives for symptom relief.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
- If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
- Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
