Corticotropin stimulates adrenal steroid release with mineralocorticoid effects, and together with chlorthalidone this can increase potassium loss and cause hypokalemia. Fluid retention may also oppose the diuretic effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Chlorthalidone and Corticotropin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Chlorthalidone belongs to Cardiovascular; Corticotropin belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive potassium wasting from thiazide-type diuresis and corticotropin-induced corticosteroid and mineralocorticoid activity.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and magnesium during combined use. Replace potassium as needed.
